About Us

The Institute for Human Genetics, an Organized Research Unit (ORU) in the School of Medicine, is a focal point on the UCSF campus for faculty who share an interest in human genetics. The Institute is comprised of over 70 Core faculty members from all four schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing). Our administrative unit, based on Parnassus, serves the daily administration requirements of 10 research laboratories.

Directed by Neil J Risch since its inception as a Center in 2005, we received ORU status in 2007, at which point we officially changed our name to the Institute for Human Genetics. The Institute aims to build upon the cohesive and productive research, education, and training environment for Genetics faculty across the UCSF campus and to forge partnerships with prominent genetics research programs throughout the Bay Area, including those at UC Berkeley and the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research.

State of the art technology that ranges from DNA Extraction to sequencing and genotyping to data l analysis is available to the campus through our Genomics Core Facility Recharge.

The Institute is governed by an Executive Committee that includes:
